The Danelectro '59 is a must have guitar for serious guitar collectors and tone chasers! it has been immortalized by many guitarists but it is mostly known for being played by guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.
NOS stands for ‘New Old Sound’ and it refers to the single coil ‘lipstick’ pickups. Danelectro found old pickup magnets in their factory warehouse and, they discovered that the aged magnets gave a distinct tone, giving a new sound to their already unique pickups, boosting the low, low mid and high frequencies.
The body is a semi hollow build with Masonite front, back and sides and a Poplar center block. The guitar was originally made with these woods because Danelectro made the ‘59 shorthorn guitars to a tight budget when they were first introduced in 1959. Don’t let the budget friendly materials put you off! the fact it is made out of these materials and is semi hollow means that the '59 is very lightweight and resonant. Along with it's sleek and minimalistic body design and shape making the guitar more unique!
The neck and fretboard is made from more conventional materials than the body's materials. The neck is made out of Maple and the fret board is made from Rosewood balancing the tone with the ‘brightness’ and ‘clarity’ that the Maple neck gives and the ‘warmth’ of the rosewood fret board. The neck is topped with the signature ‘Coke Bottle’ head stock as the headstock resembled a Coca Bottle from the 1950s.
